Waterworks Workshops

June 11th/12th, 2011

Materials & Applications has been a long-time supporter of projects which encourage and push sustainable systems, such as Here There Be Monsters and Back To Basics. We have also hosted numerous workshops which advocate energy efficiency and water saving methods for the built environment. With the summer months fast approaching, we felt it would be the perfect time to host a series of workshops focused on water saving strategies. Both of these 2 workshop will be very hands-on, showing participants first-hand how to build their own systems and start saving both money and water for your own home or business. These workshops will be lead by M&A friends and colleagues Leigh Jerrard, whose focus is greywater systems, and Daniel Beaulieu, whose expertise is rainwater catchment.

LAUNDRY TO LANDSCAPE
Greywater System Workshop
Lead by Leigh Jerrard
Saturday, June 11th 12PM-5PM

Are you interested in learning how to capture and reuse your own greywater to save money and conserve water? On June 11, Leigh Jerrard of Greywater Corps will teach homeowners how to install their own greywater irrigation system. Due to recent changes in the building code these systems are now legal to install without a permit! The workshop will include an overview of greywater: best practices and common mistakes, when not to use greywater, soil considerations, permitting and legal issues, etc, as well as an analysis of different types of greywater system. Then he will show us how to convert a washing machine to a “gravity dripline” system. Be ready for a hands-on installation at M&A as we set up our own greywater system on site, with the help of Leigh and participants.

BEYOND THE 50 GALLON BARREL
Rainwater System Workshop
Lead by Daniel Beaulieu
Sunday, June 12th 12PM-5PM

Did you know that Los Angeles gets 14 in. of rainfall on average each year, it is a Mediterranean climate! We get enough rainfall that if we stored the rain that fell on our rooftops, we would cover all of our irrigation requirements in the entire city, saving the purified tapwater that gets delivered to our homes for its intended use: drinking, cooking, and bathing. Join us Sunday, June 12th as Daniel Beaulieu shows us how to prepare a rainwater catchment system on our own home.

Leigh Jerrard is the founder of Greywater Corps and a leed-accredited architect and ecologist. He is a level 2 graduate of the Greywater Installer's Program and certified by Greywater Action.
